Wessel Nijman has qualified for the second round at the 2024 Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest without having to exert excessive effort. He defeated Hungarian qualifier Gyorgy Jehirszki to win 3-0.
It was Jehirszki's debut on the Euro Tour, although the Hungarian did participate in the World Series tournament in Poland earlier this year. Back then, he took a leg against reigning world champion Luke Humphries. That was not to be here, although Jehirszki still had two chances to win a leg. In the first leg, Nijman quickly distanced himself from his opponent. He missed some darts to win the leg, but made it 1-0 with a 19-darter. Nijman then made it 2-0 with a 76 finish.
In the third leg there were two more misses by Nijman, after which Jehirszki had two chances to get on the scoreboard. He did not take them, allowing the Dutchman to make it 3-0 with another 19-darter. Nijman then switched up a level. With a 14-darter, he made it 4-0, before making it 5-0 with a 96 finish for a 15-darter. Nijman then closed out the match with a 15-darter, giving himself a clash with Gerwyn Price.
Niels Zonneveld will also be back in the second round at the Hungarian Darts Trophy. 'Triple Z' had to make a big effort, however, as he dealt with Sebastian Bialecki only after a decisive leg. The first six legs of the match all went against the darts. Bialecki threw out 68 and 71, while Zonneveld threw out 120 and 72. In the seventh leg, the Dutchman took the lead for the first time by throwing out 60.
The next three legs also went with the darts, so an eleventh and deciding leg was needed to determine a winner. Zonneveld started the last leg and hit a 180. With a 15-darter he took the win. Zonneveld will face Ricardo Pietreczko in the second round of this tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Keane Barry also secured a spot in the second round of the Euro Tour event in Budapest. The Irish dart player won 6-2 against Darren Beveridge, who made his debut on the Euro Tour circuit. Barry will face Gian van Veen, who had a bye in the first round, in the last 32.
Daryl Gurney also learned his opponent for the next round on Friday afternoon. Florian Hempel beat Callan Rydz 6-5 to qualify for the last 32 at the Hungarian Darts Trophy.
Rydz initially looked to be heading for a big win against the German. A 14-darter and a 102 finish gave ‘The Riot’ a 5-2 lead. With a 15-darter and a 14-darter, Hempel then reduced the deficit to 5-4. Rydz then missed two matchdarts in the tenth leg, after which Hempel forced a final leg. The German was allowed to start the last leg and completed his comeback with an 18-darter.
