Wessel Nijman is set to make his debut at the
Grand Slam of Darts in November. The Dutchman on Saturday secured qualification for the prestigious tournament in Wolverhampton via the
Development Tour Order of Merit.
In recent years, the number one seed on the Development Tour, the PDC's youth circuit, has been invited to compete in the Grand Slam of Darts. The Development Tour is a circuit consisting of a series of 24 tournaments, with the winner of each tournament collecting 2,500 pounds.
After 20 of the 24 tournaments, Nijman had already built up a comfortable lead. Saturday afternoon the 21st tournament of the season was played and it was won by Nijman, who captured his sixth title already. With this title, Nijman's lead over his closest rivals has become unbridgeable and he has secured first place in the final standings.
It will be Nijman's first time to compete at the Grand Slam of Darts. After Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen, he is the third Dutchman to qualify for this tournament.
Nijman has three more tournaments this weekend to gain extra rhythm toward the start of the PDC World Youth Championship on Monday. Then 128 players in the under-23 category will begin the Youth World Championship. Games will then be played until the two finalists are known. The final will then take place on Nov. 24 at the Players Championship Finals.
