The world's best darters will be in Blackpool from Saturday, July 13 to Sunday, July 21 for the
World Matchplay. During this prestigious event, the 32 participants may split a total of 800,000 pounds in
prize money.
The Winter Gardens in Blackpool has hosted the World Matchplay since its inception. The top 16 players in the world rankings and the 16 best Pro Tour players qualify and face off from there.
All 32 participants in the World Matchplay are guaranteed a minimum of £10,000 in prize money, which is equal to the amount paid out in the event of a first-round defeat. A win in the first round earns £15,000 anyway. The quarterfinalists will receive £30,000 and the losers from the semifinals will earn £50,000.
The finalists earn 100,000 pounds anyway, while the winner even goes home with a check for 200,000 pounds. In addition, the winner also gets to take home the Phil Taylor Trophy.
The trophy is named after Taylor because "The Power" managed to win the tournament no less than 16 times in his career. The Englishman had a dream farewell at the Winter Gardens in 2017 by also taking the title in his last appearance at the World Matchplay.
A total of 12 names are on the World Matchplay honor roll. Michael van Gerwen (three times) and Rod Harrington (twice) are the only other players besides Taylor who have won the World Matchplay multiple times. James Wade, Gary Anderson, Peter Wright, Dimitri van den Bergh, Larry Butler, Peter Evison, Colin Lloyd, Rob Cross and Nathan Aspinall won the event once.
