Luke Littler says he’s
closing in on the world number one spot and is confident he can overtake Luke
Humphries if his form continues. Speaking after his historic
World Matchplay
win, the 18-year-old admitted he’s had his eyes on the top ranking for a long
time and believes the pressure is now firmly on Humphries to hold onto it.
“I’ve
been chasing for a good 18 months now,” Littler said. “It’s massive, there’ll
be pressure on Luke because I’m sure he wants to stay at world number one.”
Littler’s rise has been
nothing short of spectacular. Since reaching the World Championship final on
debut, then winning the Premier League and Matchplay in the same year, which has
seen him earn over £1.5 million in prize money. With more events to come in
2025, including the World Grand Prix, European Championship and Grand Slam, he
has plenty of opportunities to climb further.
Thanks to his recent wins
and the fact that he has no ranking points to defend from 2023, Littler is in a
strong position. Humphries, meanwhile, will need to replicate or better several
of his performances from last year or risk losing points and his ranking.
“If he doesn’t defend all
his prize money then I’ll go to number one,” Littler explained. “But it
wouldn’t surprise me if he went and defended all the prize money.”
Even so, Littler’s momentum
makes him the biggest threat to Humphries. He has consistently hit big
averages, produced high-quality finishes and shown maturity beyond his years on
the biggest stages.
“Fingers crossed I’ll be
world number one for the Worlds,” he said. With the PDC World Championship now
offering a £1 million first prize, the end-of-year tournament could be
decisive. If Littler arrives at Alexandra Palace within striking distance and wins
the title, that prize money could catapult him past Humphries.
For now, the teenager
remains focused, determined, and well aware that consistent performance is what
it takes to earn the top spot. Whether he overtakes Humphries before or during
the World Championship, Littler’s belief is clear: he belongs at the top, and
it’s only a matter of time before the rankings reflect it.
