Wright hasn't been in the best form as of late but this will act as a real confidence boost for 'Snakebite' who will see a big opportunity now to claim another World Series title.
This is especially with Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson in particular both out; he will now take on Nathan Aspinall in the second semi-final.
Both players started well with the first four legs shared but Gurney hit the front at 3-2 up and extended his lead to 4-2 with a clinical 112 checkout.
Wright continued to falter on the doubles and Gurney stepped in for double eight and a 5-2 advantage over 'Snakebite'.
He started to come back into it though with a streak of 3 consecutive legs to draw level at 5-5. This all started off with a brilliant 10 dart finish which saw the former UK Open champion hit back-to-back 180's followed by double eighteen for a 10 dart finish.
His brilliant finishing which seemed to desert him for some time at the start continued with him going 6-5 up with a 80 checkout.
Gurney stopped the rot and it seemed like we could be going all the way but Wright kept his cool and reeled off the last two legs to move through to the semi-finals.
