In what will likely be the first of many meetings between the world's top two this year, it is
Peter Wright who has struck first sealing
Players Championship Two in Barnsley seeing off
Gerwyn Price 8-5.
Wright could become World Number One in the coming weeks and potentially showcased a sign of the darting future with a 95 average, 8/20 on his doubles, a highest checkout of 121 and four 180's en route to seeing off his rival.
Price hit a 174 set up to leave 94 after being nowhere in the leg but missed double six for a break and Wright picked off 56 to go 1-0 up.
After both holding, Price took an early break on double 10 to go 2-1 up. He missed double 18 for a 97 checkout though and Wright returned but missed a chance to break back. ‘The Iceman’ pinned double 18 for a 3-1 lead. Wright held on double eight to make it 3-2.
Price missed three darts to hold and he handed Wright a chance to break which he took with a 74 checkout to make it 3-3.
A 110 checkout saw Wright hold to make it 4-3. Price held on double 20 to make it 4-4. A 180 was hit by Price but was nearly erased as Wright missed 170 on the bull. Price replied with a 116 checkout on the bull himself to go 5-4 up.
Wright missed 136 to break back and returned with Price not hitting 170 hitting double eight to make it 5-5.
Price spurned chances to break back and Wright hit double seven to go 6-5 up. ‘The Iceman’ couldn’t take out 101 with a bull, double 16 shot going begging and Wright went 7-5 up with a 121 checkout. Price hit another 180 but Wright left double 20 to claim the title pinning double 10 from there.
