The opening round of the 2024
Czech Darts Open has now been completed and the final two spots in round 2 on offer, have gone to a pair of world champions in
Peter Wright and
Michael Smith.
Wright did 'edged compatriot Cameron Menzies 6-5 in the first round of the Czech Darts Open in Prague. For a moment 'Cammy' had hope for his chances after Menzies reversed a 3-5 deficit and was allowed to start in the last leg. Wright took the win with a 14-darter.
This result is an inadvertant boost for Dirk Van Duijvenbode in the fight for the final European Championship spots. Van Duijvenbode is not yet definitively assured of participation in the final tournament in Dortmund, but things are now looking tremendously good. Only Niels Zonneveld (with run to final), Krzysztof Ratajski (with run to final), Martin Lukeman (with run to final), Alan Soutar (if he takes the title) Pavel Drtil (if he takes the title) and Kim Huybrechts (if he takes the title) can still keep Van Duijvenbode out.
In the final match of the first round, Michael Smith also managed to secure a spot in the last 32. Smith was broken in his match against Kevin Doets in the first leg, but in the end the former world champion still won 6-3.
