Peter Wright has extended
Michael van Gerwen's wait for a first title of 2021 and claimed his third ProTour of the year once again doing it on the final day of a PDC
Super Series in a phenomenal display.
Wright averaged 108.8 in the end with Van Gerwen himself producing 106.2 but it was only enough for an 8-2 scoreline in favour of 'Snakebite' who will now go to the World Matchplay full of confidence after beating one of his main rivals.
Wright took the game to Van Gerwen in the early going taking the game to the Green Machine.
This featured a 180 and 84 to lead before a 74 on the bullseye to double his advantage. He backed this up with a 64 checkout to break once more.
Van Gerwen was only given a shot at 130 with Wright on 56 and he took it to break back and go 3-1 down.
Both couldn't miss the treble 20 and it was Van Gerwen first at a shot at 81 but he missed bull allowing Wright back at 58 which he took to break straight back at 4-1.
Van Gerwen set up a nine-dart chance on 150 but it potentially had to go with Wright on 144 and when he missed, 'Snakebite' took out 324 in six darts with an incredible checkout to make it 5-1.
Van Gerwen left 52 on his throw with Wright on 115 but the latter couldn't produce this time and Van Gerwen stopped the rot of sorts to make it 5-2.
Wright was on 87 after nine and hit double nine to go to the brink. A rare slip gave Van Gerwen a reprieve but he didn't take it and Wright went one away at 7-2 on double 11 with a 109 average.
Van Gerwen was only left on 170 but it didn't matter as Wright pinned 71 on double eight.
