Peter Wright got through his first test at the 2021/22 PDC World Darts Championship with relative ease as he took out Ryan Meikle and despite not being at his best, he was full of praise for his opponent in particular.
"I got through, didn't play well. Ryan didn't turn up tonight, he played well in patches last night - I've known him since he was 12 or 13 years old and he was good then. It's nice to see when I retire, he'll take James Wade's place as a left hander. But he's still got a lot of learning to do, he's the future of darts," said Wright post match.
It was a hard act to follow though with the brilliance of William Borland and Bradley Brooks.
"Weren't that amazing. It's great for darts, it's great for youngsters. They're showing what they can do on last legs. We know Willie is a great player, I love Bradley Brooks as well, he's a fighter."
Fans returned in full at the World Darts Championship this time amid Omicron fears which could yet derail proceedings and he had a message for the fans.
"Fingers crossed it carries on for the whole World Championship. Everyone stay safe and take tests and we will have an amazing tournament."
