Peter Wright will face Dimitri van den Bergh tomorrow night in the final of the 2021 World Matchplay after producing a crushing win over Michael van Gerwen with the highest average ever seen in a semi-final at the Winter Gardens.

Wright produced a 110.3 average in an incredible 17-10 win over his great rival with 12 180's, three ton plus checkouts and 45% on his doubles to deny MVG who himself averaged 101 and stepped it up a notch from his Quarter-Final win over Nathan Aspinall.

It was an incredible start from Wright who was leaving Van Gerwen for dust at 4-1 up but he had a nine darter attempt in which he left 11 which he couldn't pin and Van Gerwen sniffed a chance at 5-2 down.

He claimed an important hold and halted the momentum of Wright who went into the break 6-4 up but not having it all his own way.

On return, Wright held and went eight darts into another nine-dart finish showing how brilliant he was playing but he missed the double 12 but returned to pin it and break to make it 8-4.

A tenth 180 and an 81 checkout for an 11-darter saw Wright continue to run riot for a 9-4 lead averaging 113 which he extended with a 98 checkout.

But a rare lapse gifted Van Gerwen a break back as he missed five darts at double and it allowed MVG a 10-5 deficit instead of 11-4 at the interval.

It was all Van Gerwen when they returned who took out 127 and made it back-to-back legs going 10-8 behind from there.

Wright stopped the rot but a 72 checkout saw Van Gerwen make it 11-9 and keep himself only two behind his rival.

But an incredible 149 checkout with Van Gerwen sat on 100 signalled Wright's push once more. He finished 80 to regain his three leg lead and produced a hammer blow in the form of a 121 checkout on the bull to break and make it 14-10.

He went one away from there on double 19 correcting himself after drifting into treble one and there was a look of resignation on Van Gerwen's face and throw as Wright saw it out.

Simply outstanding. Peter Wright produces the highest average ever seen in a World Matchplay semi-final (110.37) in a magnificent contest against Michael van Gerwen. He will face Dimitri Van den Bergh in Sunday's final.
