Peter Wright claimed victory in one of the finest displays ever seen at the
World Matchplay producing a 110.37 average in a 17-10 win over
Michael van Gerwen.
He will now face his former lodger during the Coronavirus pandemic, Dimitri van den Bergh, the defending champion for the title tomorrow.
He was very emotional on stage afterwards and revealed it related to his wife, Jo who has just had surgery and will be there tomorrow for him.
"She's going to be here tomorrow. That's why I got upset because I promised her I was going to get to the final and she can be here," he said to RTL7.
"That was my motivation, I was emotional as well as beating Michael because he is the best player in the world and we all know that.
"For me to be favourite against Michael van Gerwen is crazy but I suppose my darts have been backing it up and obviously Michael's not been quite on his game but that was a cracking game. We all know he's an awesome player and he will be back soon. I'm looking forward to many more battles.
"Jo had her operation last Thursday, spine surgery and she's been in a lot of pain for the past couple of years. It's her third operation and the other two haven't worked. This one seems a lot better, instead of going home, she come up her Sunday."
