The two players who reached the final of the last European Tour tournament are out at the very first hurdle with Peter Wright and Dimitri van den Bergh losing in the second round at the Belgian Darts Open in Wieze.
Wright was facing Niels Zonneveld and there didn't seem to be any love lost in the the latter stages as 'Snakebite' declined the fist bump leaving the Dutchman hanging but in reality, it will be Zonneveld that sticks around this weekend as he sealed a deciding leg win to stun the World Champion.
It was a 94 average in the end with three 180's and three ton plus checkouts meaning 60% on the doubles in one of the best displays seen in the career of the initial Development Tour standout.
'Snakebite' had the upper hand to begin as he went 3-2 up with a break of throw and hit a 100 checkout for a 4-2 lead consolidating but missing chances to go one away and break again, it all started to unravel.
Zonneveld produced his own 11-dart 100 checkout to break and make it 4-4 suddenly before hitting a 126 checkout on double six to go one away and despite sending it the distance, Zonneveld was down to a finish first with Wright only sat waiting and he took out double nine after initially missing 85 for the match.
While for the home hero in Van den Bergh, it was Andrew Gilding who accounted for him and silenced the home crowd meaning with Mike de Decker also out, their hopes like in times gone by will rely on Kim Huybrechts later this evening.
Gilding held his throw throughout the contest in a steady display, mistakes were not punished with one break chance missed in the fifth leg and it went all the way to a decider which Goldfinger who is rocking a new darts shirt this weekend took with a 15-darter as he continues his excellent 2022.
