On Sunday night, finals day of the 2024 WDF World Championship took place at the Lakeside. World titles were played for in the women's and men's tournament, as well as in the youth. Innthe boy's, 15-year-old Archie Self defeated his compatriot Jenson Walker 3-2 in an exciting final.
Self and Walker dished up a high-level match to the crowd. In the end, it was Self who edged his three-year older compatriot, securing the 3-2 success with his sixth matchdart, averaging 81.34 in the process. "I can't believe it. It's a dream come true," he reflected in his post-match interview. "I never thought I'd win this tournament because my form wasn't good at the minute, but then it just showed up."
"My expectation was just to win the first match," Self continues, explaining his lack of expectation pre-tournament. "So when I done that, it was just to try and get to the final which I did. Then, it was to win the final which I did!"
"We all know how good Jenson is. He's been on Modus, he's played at the UK Open, he's a class player and just to beat him and win the title is another unbelievable statement," Self adds.
Self realizes that a new world will open up for him after this World Championship victory, one where he may even be recognized much more often. "I think my confidence will go back up a lot more because of the stage I've played on and won on," he concludes. "It's just a great thing to be called the world champion. It's so brilliant!"
