After the Dutch Open Darts last week, the
WDF Tour is back in full swing this weekend with the
Scottish Open and Scottish Classic. In the open tournament, 15-year-old Scottish sensation
Mitchell Lawrie made headlines again.
Lawrie, who lost the final of the WDF World Championship at the iconic
Lakeside Country Club late last year to Jimmy van Schie, reached the final of the Scottish Classic. There he takes to the stage today against the Englishman James Beeton.
It is set to be a fascinating clash against the talented darters. The 21-year-old Beeton may be six years Lawrie's senior but is still someone to keep an eye on for the future. Especially when he is putting up performances like in his semi-final where he averaged 102.75 to take down Scott Campbell 5-3. Lawire won his with a comfortable 5-0 triumph against Ryan Hogarth.
Ahead of the ranking events of the WDF Scottish Open and the WDF Scottish Classic, the Scottish Open Pairs was completed as tradition dictates.
The men’s final was contested by the pairs Hogarth/Sean Fisher and Jenson Walker/Nick Fullwell. In the decider, Ryan Hogarth and Welshman Sean Fisher made a big impression. With an excellent team average of 95.94, they showed why they were among the favourites. The English duo Walker/Fullwell barely got a foothold, and Hogarth and Fisher sealed the title with a convincing 3-0 victory.
Mitchell Lawrie is one of the brightest prospects in darts
McKinlay and Gibbons gunning for glory
In the women’s event, the final is between Scotland’s Sophie McKinlay and England’s Macy Gibbons. That final will also be played on stage today. It could be a great day for Scottish darts if McKinlay can back up Lawrie's possible success. She defeated Giffy Khaosoi in the semi-finals while Gibbons got one over PDC World Darts Championship participant Gemma Hayter 4-2.
In the women’s pairs final, the title ultimately went to the Scottish/Irish pair Lynsey Ward and Rebecca Allen. They proved too strong for the English duo Michelle Binns and Marie Fitton, winning 3-0.
