After four consecutive Dutch winners in the men’s tournament at the
Dutch Open Darts in Assen,
Paul Krohne spoiled the home celebration on Sunday evening by clinching the WDF title. He also became the first-ever German winner at this event.
On his way to the
final, Krohne beat, among others, Ron Meulenkamp (4-2), Heine Uuldriks (5-2) and Jenson Walker (2-0 in sets). Corné Groeneveld became his opponent in the final after the Dutchman had taken care of Kenny Neyens (4-2), Patrick Geeraets (4-1), Lennert Faes (5-3) and former champion Jarno Bottenberg (2-0 in sets).
Groeneveld then looked on course for the title, as he raced into a 2-0 lead in sets in the final. He also moved 2-1 ahead in the third set with a 170 checkout. However, Groeneveld missed two match darts for the title, and moments later Krohne took the third set with an 11-darter. The German made it 2-2 in sets before completing the comeback in the fifth set to pocket the top prize of 6,000 euros.
There was a Dutch winner in the women’s event. After
Priscilla Steenbergen won her semifinal against Lerena Rietbergen (4-2), Steenbergen proved too strong in the final for surprise finalist Rachna David (5-3). With this title, Steenbergen earns 3,000 euros in prize money.
