The first round is over at the 2024 WDF World Championship in Frimley Green. Eight new matches are scheduled on Wednesday. We will first get four matches from the second round of the men's tournament and two duels from the second round in the women's, before starting the third round in the men's.
We begin the afternoon session with a meeting between Barry Copeland and Aaron Turner, who will decide between them who will face former WDF world champion Neil Duff in the next round.
Then the tournament begins for Aletta Wajer, who takes on Paula Murphy. Next is the second Lakeside appearance of Liam Maendl-Lawrance. The German will play against Sybren Gijbels. The Belgian gave his debut at Lakeside color with a victory over Kevin Luke. The final match of the afternoon session is between Jason Brandon and Hannes Schnier.
The evening session gets underway with a showdown between Gary Stone and Dennis Nilsson. Then it is the turn of Lerena Rietbergen, who faces Rhian O'Sullivan in the second round. A difficult duel in advance for the Dutchwoman, who meets an outsider for the world title with O'Sullivan.
Belgian fans may get ready for a delightful clash between Brian Raman and Francois Schweyen. Both Belgians have already had two duels in Frimley Green. Raman previously won over Corné Groeneveld (2-1) and Martyn Turner (3-1), while Schweyen recorded victories over Michael Cassar (2-0) and Danny Porter (3-0).
Rounding out the day of play are Brandon Weening and Shane McGuirk. The latter has tentatively emerged as one of the best players of this tournament. The Irishman won 2-0 over Mark Barilli in the first round with an average of 92.81, while he even produced an average of 96.16 in the second round against Edwin Torbjornsson (3-0). Weening had the first round off, prevailing 3-1 against Jun Matsuda in the second round.
