Only announced in the weeks prior and courting criticism as a result, the WDF World Masters did take place in 2022 won on the men's side by Wesley Plaisier.
But WDF Secretary General, Nick Rolls admits there is a chance that it might not take place in 2023 and there are current ongoing conversations about it with a decision imminent in the coming weeks.
"We knew the announcement in 2022 was too late, it was only six or seven weeks before the tournament took place. Our member countries couldn't hold their qualifying tournaments which also enables them to make a few quid to be able to pay their players to go to World Cups, that wasn't great," he said on the Weekly Dartscast.
"It really hit home with me that some players couldn't come because they'd used up all their holiday. Those that come from miles away have flights to buy, they need to do that as early as possible to get the best flight costs of course. So for 2023, we've given ourselves a deadline at the end of March. We've got five or six weeks to make a final decision on whether there is going to be a World Masters in 23. It's all about the commercials, it has to stack up."
"It's the number one thing on our agenda and has been over the past three or four weeks. Never say never and I'm hopeful but I wouldn't say it's definitely on."
