"The Thorn's going to come back": Robert Thornton vows to climb back up the PDC rankings

Two-time PDC major champion Robert Thornton believes he will soon be back at the top of his game.

The Thorn has been a PDC mainstay for the past decade. In 2012, he joined the pantheon of major winners by claiming UK Open success. Three years on, he stunned Michael van Gerwen in a classic final to become the World Grand Prix champion. Things have been tougher for Thornton lately, however.

Amid concerns at home, as well as injury woes and significant wobbles in form, the Scot has tumbled down the rankings. However, a recent nine-darter and run to the Players Championship 16 semi-finals suggests that he may be heading in the right direction.

"It's a start, and if I can throw like that for the rest of the season I'll be quite happy and they'll be in trouble," Thornton surmised when speaking to Live Darts.

Backbone

Thornton paid tribute to two very different inspirations; his wife, and Steve Beaton.

"Rob Thornton's not going anywhere, my wife's on the mend and The Thorn's going to come back - simple," the 51-year-old vowed.

"My missus is my backbone, she calls me a little pit bull with the heart of a lion, but she's the driving force.

"I don't care about these young upstarts coming up and thinking they can beat me. The old boys want to improve just as much as they do. We've got as much fire in us as them.

"Look at Steve Beaton, he’s still going strong. The Bronzed Adonis turns up, smile on his face, and churns out the results. We can all do it."

Grand Prix homecoming

A lot has happened since Thornton scored his surprise Grand Prix victory in Dublin. October will mark four years since that success. The former Scottish World Cup player would like to make sure he's at the tournament to mark the anniversary, and continue his comeback.

"I don't know if I can make Blackpool but I'm setting my sights on getting back to Dublin - I want my title back.

"Double-start and double-finish, that's my game, I love it.

"2015 feels like a lifetime ago, but if anyone out there thinks The Thorn is done, he isn't, he's just coming back," said Thornton.
