Michael van Gerwen has secured his 4th consecutive European Championship finals victory in Hasselt, Belgium.
Mighty Mike defeated PDC new boy Rob Cross in a high class affair, much to the delight of the Belgian crowd.
Cross, like Anderson in the semis, started brightly and held the advantage at the first interval. MvG missed darts in the first allowing Cross to step in and hold his throw. A ton plus finish a piece followed for more holds, van Gerwen a 104, Cross going better with an essential 140.
After the interval the pair traded breaks, along with more 180's. They still couldn't be separated at the second interval. Scores level at 5-5.
Van Gerwen finally got a 2 leg cushion in the third mini-session, breaking and then Holding to take the advantage.
Cross would respond with a hold of his own, his 6th 180 of the match helping him along the way. It wasn't enough though as voltage tailed off in the remaining legs. He had a chance to get back to 8-7 in the 15th, but missed a dart at double 16. MvG would punish and once that lead was established, never looked like faltering.
Cross' exploits have moved him up to World Number 24. Unfortunately he wasn't able to add a major trophy to his collection today, but with 3 left this year, who knows how 2017 could end for him?
Van Gerwen on the other hand picked up his 37th televised title. He'll be looking to continue his fine run of form heading into the World Championships. If he picks up the remaining 3 televised titles this year he'll end the year with 40, and an unassailable lead at the top of the world rankings for another year.
