13 seeds have been sent packing after one match, a new World Championship record. Now the top of the PDC crop have a wide selection of upstart young challengers and surprise outsiders. Ryan Joyce fits both categories nicely. After a routine 3-0 win over Anastasia Dobromyslova, Joyce gave Simon Whitlock exactly the same treatment. Next up he faces Alan Norris, arguably the seed people thought was most vulnerable pre-tournament. After showing major bottle against Steve Lennon, Norris is one step away from the last 16. Who'd have thought it?
A meeting between two seeds is rarer than usual in the third round, but both of the last two games on the afternoon schedule are. First up there's Dave Chisnall, who did well to avert a shock and seal a brilliant comeback win over Josh Payne. Daniel Larsson didn't deserve a whitewash on Wednesday, but he got one, because Kim Huybrechts was simply awesome. A 103.26 tournament average, albeit after one game, makes the Belgian a form horse.
And in the afternoon's final match, Daryl Gurney meets Jamie Lewis. Last year, Gurney tumbled as soon as the tournament entered a best-of-seven format. He won't want a repeat against Jamie Lewis, a man who learned last year how to take scalps. Gurney was excellent against Ross Smith and will fancy this one. He'd then play Chisnall or Huybrechts for the right to play Gary Anderson, you'd assume, in the quarter-finals. The way this tournament is going, perhaps he should expect Chris Dobey.
