Jim Williams and Richard Veenstra each won in five sets in a dramatic afternoon session at the Lakeside.

Williams became the first player to recover from a two set deficit to win at this year's World Championship, with Dennis Nilsson on the receiving end. Veenstra narrowly avoided the same fate, beating Kyle McKinstry in a tense decider at the Lakeside.
A total of 87 darts at a double were missed by Williams and Nilsson in an entertaining yet frustrating tussle. The Welshman had darts to win every leg in the first two sets, but a lack of composure allowed Nilsson to go 2-0 up. But then the Swede, normally so ruthless on tops, lost his nerve.
Offered a chance to get back into the game, Williams did not hesitate. The seed rattled off the next two sets to force a fifth set showdown in a match high on big scores but bereft of reliable finishing. The fifth set, true to form, went all the way. But it was Williams who struck double ten to seal a second round spot with an 84 average.
Veenstra got off to a superb start against McKinstry, averaging north of 90 after two sets. With a 2-0 lead secured, the Flyer was flying. But his standard dropped in the third, giving the Northern Irishman a chance to bounce back. The Dutchman averaged 105 in the fourth set, yet McKinstry would not quit. The world number 23, himself averaging 100 in the set, nailed a crucial 144 finish to take the game all the way. But Veenstra proved too strong, and it is he who progresses to the last 16.
