Nathan Aspinall is through to the semi-finals of the
World Grand Prix for the first time after a hard fought 3-2 sets win over debutant Martin Lukeman.
Aspinall produced a 90 average, five 180's and two 100+ checkouts with a high of 138 with 52% on his finishing doubles and will now face Gerwyn Price or Madars Razma in the semi-finals.
Aspinall began the tie with a hold pinning 113 and despite Lukeman getting a break back, Aspinall got in first and struck first sealing the opening set to go 1-0 up.
Both held with Aspinall hitting a 15-darter on double four to level up set two. A 147 checkout saw Lukeman go 2-1 up though. Aspinall hit 60 with Lukeman sat on double 10 waiting to pounce for the set and it was 2-2 as Lukeman had the throw to level up.
Aspinall pressured but Lukeman hit a 69 checkout to seal the set. To start the third set, Aspinall was superb and hit a 50 checkout for a 14-darter to hold.
Aspinall hit double 12 for a 138 checkout to break with Lukeman ready on 70 to hold and he was one away from a 2-1 sets lead which he sealed on double 16.
A 97 checkout saw Lukeman lead a pivotal set. Aspinall missed 69 but Lukeman could not get a dart at 102 which allowed ‘The Asp’ back but he missed two darts which allowed ‘Smash’ back to hit 48.
A 152 start followed by 140 saw Lukeman head towards the set but two poor visits after Aspinall hit a 180 saw Aspinall have a shot at 110 which he missed only to return with Lukeman unable to take out 108 and he took a break back on double 12.
Lukeman missed 122 on the bull for the set and Aspinall hit a 78 checkout to hold, but Lukeman hit double 10 to send it the distance.
An 89 checkout began the decider for Aspinall to hold and he hit double 16 to break and go one away. Lukeman missed double 16 for a 68 checkout but Aspinall couldn’t hit a 76 checkout and Lukeman made it 2-1. Aspinall hit a 71 checkout on double 20 to seal it.
