Starting proceedings on the penultimate day before the Christmas break at the
World Darts Championship was two former World Cup partners colliding as Northern Ireland's
Brendan Dolan and
Mickey Mansell collided. It was a 3-2 win for 'The History Maker' in a sudden death classic on the Ally Pally stage.
Dolan sealed it in a fifth set last leg averaging 95 and winning despite having fewer legs than his opponent in a true showcase of the beauty of the set format at the Alexandra Palace.
It was close throughout and this was the case from the start as Mansell missed one dart at double 20 in the deciding leg and Dolan returned for the same target to edge the opener 3-2 and lead. But back came the 'Clonoe Cyclone' as he pinned a 157 checkout on his way to sealing the second set in three consecutive legs in a less close foray.
But again Dolan led, he hit a third 180 in the deciding leg before hitting double 18 for a 13-darter to regain the upperhand. Mansell again though in his next set eased through it 3-1 with a fourth maximum as Dolan struggled to close out sets and the former breezed through them. But it went all the way in the fifth and the match needed to be won by two clear legs.
Mansell at the brink though produced the sublime as he hit a 148 checkout for 5-5 and sent it all the way. But despite initially missing chances to win it, Dolan was not to be denied as he hit double 16 to claim it.
