Kim Huybrechts has only won once in eight attempts at the World Matchplay and while that dismal record has continued, he produced his best display at the Winter Gardens albeit falling in the end to Dave Chisnall 10-7.
Darting drama saw a game full of breaks of throw and Huybrechts having chances to potentially send it the distance but Chisnall battled through in the end and will now face Gerwyn Price in Round Two.
At the first interval, Chisnall led 3-2 with a break of throw advantage but at the second interval, it was parity at 5-5 with all five legs on the return being a break of throw as Huybrechts hit a 14-darter on double 16.
He took out 72 to finally hold and go 6-5 up. Chisnall held with a 90 checkout to make it 6-6. But again it was back to breaks of throw as Chisnall pinned double five to go 7-6 up.
A 180 and double eight saw an eighth break of throw to make it 7-7. Chisnall pinned a last dart double 18 to go 8-7 up as he had the throw to potentially go one away. Huybrechts missed two at double 12 on 81 and Chisnall went one away on double 20 at 9-7.
Chisnall was superb on Huybrechts’ throw and despite missing three match darts, Huybrechts missed a dart from 90 and the St Helens returned for double four finally to seal it 10-7.
