Last night, Newcastle famously defeated PSG in a 4-1 win and it is more Geordie history as Chris Dobey has dumped out defending World Grand Prix champion, Michael van Gerwen in Leicester.
Dobey hit a spectacular 156 checkout to claim a 3-2 win over Van Gerwen in Round Two and defied a double nine-dart finish attempt from the Dutch ace. He will face either Ross Smith or Joe Cullen tomorrow night, with the favourite sent packing.
Van Gerwen missed 161 for a double start nine-darter with Dobey sat at 2-0 up and he missed 121 on the bull for the set. Dobey though still returned only to miss three more for the set.
Van Gerwen hit double two to break. But Dobey was way ahead on Van Gerwen’s throw and sealed the set finally on double 16.
Van Gerwen missed another nine-dart attempt and then 161 but went 2-0 up. He sealed a set clean sweep with a 78 checkout.
Dobey though was still superb on return and was throwing for a 2-1 sets lead. But despite being way ahead, Van Gerwen hit a 180 but missed a 108 checkout for the set and the Bedlington ace missed three more.
Van Gerwen returned to snatch the set. Dobey hit a 72 checkout to lead the fourth set and break. He missed 105 though to hold only for Van Gerwen to miss more darts but Dobey again gifted him it and it was 1-1.
Van Gerwen still couldn’t hit the bull with 170 being missed and Dobey hit a 76 checkout to break again at 2-1. MVG went one away with a break.
Dobey missed more darts with the set on the line but Van Gerwen missed a match dart on the bull. ‘Hollywood’ then took the set.
He started the decider with a 94 checkout to hold. A 65 checkout saw him go one away and he sealed it with a 156 checkout.
