Clayton ends curse of Van Gerwen following Masters victory

Jonny Clayton won The Masters this past weekend but also put an end to the so called curse of Michael van Gerwen.

Similar to the previously dominant Phil Taylor, players who win against Van Gerwen usually head out in the following round.

It happened to Clayton himself at the Masters last year as he lost to Nathan Aspinall in the requisite round.

During this edition of The Masters, he followed it up with his brilliant win over James Wade, Peter Wright and finally Mervyn King.

Simon Whitlock was a victim of this curse three times last year as he managed to beat the three-time World Champion at the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and Grand Slam of Darts but then lost to Gary Anderson, Dirk van Duijvenbode and Jose de Sousa respectively.

At the World Series of Darts Finals, Glen Durrant was too strong for Van Gerwen but then he lost to Wade. Ian White lost to Devon Petersen at the European Championship after defeating Van Gerwen the previous round.

Dave Chisnall produced his Performance of the Year from the PDC Awards against the Green Machine but he then lost to eventual runner-up Gary Anderson.
