Devon Delight for South Africa and Ireland ease through opener

Devon Petersen's woes on the oche since his emergence during 2020 have been well documented and as a result heading into a tie for South Africa with Vernon Bouwers facing Spain, the latter were favourites.

But Petersen's side should've won 4-0 spurning multiple match darts before finally falling over the line at 4-2 in one of their best displays for some time.

Petersen kicked off 180 for South Africa and hit a 46 checkout to break and make it 1-0. Bouwers hit 86 to add his own stamp to the tie at 2-0.

Again it was Bouwers as he hit a 52 checkout to make it 3-0. He missed 60 for 4-0 and victory and Petersen returned for more missed match darts.

Justicia missed the board though off 72. Only for another set of missed match darts and Martinez hit double 10 for 3-1. A 180 and double 20 saw Justicia drop the gap for Spain to 3-2.

Bouwers felt the pressure going for 90 but Martinez missed two darts for a level game and Petersen finally saw South Africa over the line at 4-2.

While Republic of Ireland pairing Keane Barry and William O'Connor made light work of Thailand 4-1 to begin Group E.

This in a game dominated by Gaweenuntavong bumping into William O'Connor who stood shaking his head getting frustrated before pinning double 12 in a catalyst towards the win.

Initially Barry got Republic of Ireland off the mark at 1-1. Thailand looked in pole position for a 2-1 lead but missed darts allowed Barry back for a break and they were throwing to go one away.

Bull was missed by Thailand for 2-2 and after being bumped into like alluded to, it was 3-1. and the game was concluded by Barry on double 10.
