Luke Humphries and
Damon Heta have both booked their place in the last 8 at the 2024
UK Open in Minehead, although the pair had varying levels of ease in their results.
On the main stage, the world champion took on the vastly experienced
Mervyn King. Although King has shown signs of a return to form after a rough year during this tournament, the multiple-time major finalist was sadly unable to come close to his A-game in this one as Humphries raced into a 6-0 lead.
After King got his first leg on the board at 6-1 though his tongue in cheek celebration seemed to tickle and maybe caused the world champion to lose a little focus as King also reeled off the next two legs to get back to 6-3. Humphries did take the last leg of the session though as the players headed off stage with the score 7-3 to the world number one.
With normal order restored by Humphries, victory was comfortably and confidently assured in just four legs in the final session. Final score, Humphries 10-4 King.
Meanwhile, on the outer board, Damon Heta pulled off an epic comeback against
Gian van Veen to reach his eighth major TV quarter-final. Recovering from 7-3 down, the Australian won seven of the last eight legs to seal a 10-8 victory. Having never previously managed to get past the quarter-final hurdle, could this finally be Heta's tournament?
