David Munyua has given his remarkable stay in London a fitting follow-up. The Kenyan darter, who made history this month as the first player from his country at the World Darts Championship, was an honorary guest of Chelsea on Saturday evening during the league match against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.
Munyua was eliminated earlier this week in the second round of the Worlds by Kevin Doets, who proved too strong with a 3-0 win. Instead of returning directly to Kenya, the 30-year-old darter stayed a few more days in the British capital. He did not do so without reason: Chelsea had personally invited him to the home match against Aston Villa.
It was a special moment for Munyua. The Kenyan has been a supporter of the London club for many years and now got the chance to watch his favorite team up close. The result on the pitch did not go as hoped, as Aston Villa took the points back to West London with a 1-2 victory, but that did little to diminish the experience.
Chelsea’s invitation did not come out of the blue. At the Worlds, Munyua made an indelible impression by overturning a 2-0 deficit against Mike De Decker in the first round. That made him not only the first Kenyan ever to win a match at a World Championship, but also an instant crowd favorite at Alexandra Palace. His rise and charisma did not go unnoticed outside the darts world either.
“I hope everybody is waiting to see me at Stamford Bridge,” he said. “I’ve obviously never seen Chelsea live because I’ve never been out of Africa before. At Stamford Bridge I think it will be an easy game for us," he said previously.
The Kenyan, who works as a veterinarian in daily life, has been a fan of the club for many years and became attached to the Blues during Didier Drogba’s successful years. “During a moment of watching football, I said this, I didn’t know much about them, but how they were performing, the moment of [Didier] Drogba and [Solomon] Kalou. They were doing crazy stuff. Drogba is from the Ivory Coast. So I started supporting.”
On Saturday, Munyua bumped into another club legend. He met Dutch striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Hasselbaink previously played 136 matches for the London club and scored 69 goals for Chelsea.
