Dirk van Duijvenbode delivered a memorable performance on Saturday night at the
European Darts Grand Prix in Germany — not just with a commanding win over Michael van Gerwen, but also through a lighthearted moment with one of his sponsors.
The Dutchman secured his first-ever stage victory over his illustrious compatriot, dispatching Van Gerwen 6–3 with an assured display. But it was his post-match antics that drew just as much attention. Appearing in front of the cameras, Van Duijvenbode sported a sponsor's sticker stuck squarely to his forehead.
“I put a sponsor’s name on my head,” he said with a grin. The unusual placement was more than just a joke — it was a creative fix to a wardrobe issue. “It might not be on my shirt tomorrow because it keeps coming off, so this is my way of making up for it,” he added.
The moment didn’t go unnoticed. The PDC’s on-stage interviewer quipped that the sponsor was likely hoping Van Duijvenbode would return to the stage on Sunday still wearing the forehead sticker. The Dutchman took it in good humour, shouting, “Winamax, Winamax, hey!” — a nod to the gambling firm featured on the sticker.
On Sunday afternoon, Van Duijvenbode took to the stage as usual, this time with the tournament sponsor's logo properly affixed to his sleeve. It didn’t slow him down in the slightest. ‘The Aubergenius’ produced a stunning performance to see off Germany’s Martin Schindler 6–2, averaging a blistering 111 in the process.
