A question that is sure to invoke a response whenever asked, "what is harder, a 147 or a 9-darter?" Can easily split the opinion within groups of friends across the country.
On the latest episode of Wayne Mardle's 'Club 501' podcast with William Hill, the former darting star turned Sky Sports analyst is joined by three time world snooker champion, 'The Welsh Potting Machine', Mark Williams MBE. Aside from the Welshman proving himself very capable with three darts in hand, the conversation with inevitably swayed towards the 147 - 9-darter debate.
With Mardle a known and very vocal advocate of the 9-darter being the more difficult challenge, Williams was well aware of who we up against in this debate. "All people have to do is tag you in a 147 or 9-darter thing then sit back and relax with a cup of tea and watch you dive in," the Welshman laughs. "I've done it myself. I've tweeted something and just gone; 'watch this!' I'm sat there drinking and I'm just laughing. 'Look at him, he's off.'"
"You come out with all these stats like how many legs have been played for every 9-darter and how many frames for every 147," Williams continues, before Mardle interrupts; "You're getting annoyed now because you know!"
"Obviously I've never done a 147 so I would say a 147 is harder but the statistics don't lie unfortunately," Mardle continues with a cheeky smile. "Do you know what's mad? I am actually with you and I think it's the 147. But until we actually got the stats, so since the start of the World Championships Snooker from the Crucible in 1977, 147s per frame and in the same time frame 9-darters per leg, the 9-darters is less."
As shown by Williams more than decent darts skills throughout the video, the abilities of both sports are often quite transferable too. Both dart player Gary Anderson and snooker player Shaun Murphy claim to have completed both a 147 and 9-darter. "Just don't get annoyed because a 9-darter is more difficult than a 147!" Mardle concludes.
What do you think is tougher? A 147 or a 9-darter? Let us know your thoughts!
