Luke Littler is well known as 'The Nuke' but could he be known as 'The Duke' as
Wayne Mardle hilariously floated a new nickname to the 17-year-old darting sensation.
Littler has enjoyed a superb opening season in professional darts. He was the runner-up in the World Championship and has seen his popularity hike as has the sport in the past six months. Mardle believes that Littler needs a nickname with more prestige.
He sees the success as key to a rebrand. He wants Littler to go by the nickname 'The Duke' giving three key points similar to a manifesto. He said it would give 'authority, importance and gravitas'.
“Pal. I’ve been thinking. This may have already been discussed, apologies if so. Anyway… I think you should use the nickname ‘The Duke’. Luke The Duke Littler," wrote Mardle on social media platform X.
“It carries authority, importance, gravitas. There you go. No charge. See you soon.”
Like a lot of nicknames in darts, it came from nowhere and nothing really with a talk in the pub gleaming it. "We were sitting in a pub, me and my father. I was about 13 or 14 years old,” Littler told the Metro.
“I didn't have a nickname and it just went well with my real name. We sat down and thought: Luke, Luke, Luke, and then Luke 'The Nuke' came to mind."
But the rebrand is unlikely, he has trademarked the nickname as an intellectual property as he hopes to continue to cash in with potential merchandise with the rising popularity of darts. Luke Littler perfume anyone?
