In recent years there has been more and more money to be made in the darts world. But with income comes taxes, of course, and getting it all right often proves to be not so easy.

Vincent van der Voort himself was active on the PDC Pro Tour for many years. Together with his best friend Michael van Gerwen, he went to "the highest man at the Tax Office" to find out how it all worked. "And even he didn't understand anything about it," Van der Voort said in the podcast 'Darts Draait Door'.
Podcast guest Jeffrey de Zwaan also had a negative experience with taxes and received an after-tax bill of 55,000 euros. "It was a miscommunication with my old accountant. He had not passed on that I actually had to pay that," he says.
"That was a shock and it's not a nice message to get. So I wasn't expecting it, so then it hits you raw. Fortunately, I had 80,000 euros saved up, so I could pay it in no time. But still it hurt, more than half of it evaporated. That hurt a lot. When you go to place 20 in the world and you see what you earn, you want to have a little more of that. The financial picture did disappoint me."
Higher amount
Van der Voort adds that he had to cough up an even higher amount. This after his accountant didn't understand the combination of English taxes and Dutch taxes. "In the end, that's how it works: you pay the accountant to take care of this, because he has studied for it and understands it," Van der Voort says.
"But if he makes a mistake, you are responsible and he is not. I don't think that's very fair, but that's how it works."
