The second Players Championship of the year was a triumph for Gerwyn Price. 'The Iceman' defeated Chris Dobey 8-7 in a high-class final to capture his first PDC ranking title since 2023. However, the highest average went to another player.
Andrew Gilding was a 6-1 winner over former Lakeside champion Jelle Klaasen in the first round, posting an average of 107.91. Nobody did better all day on Tuesday in Wigan. By the way, Gilding fell one round later after a 6-5 defeat to Callan Rydz.
The second highest average came in tournament winner Price's name. The 39-year-old Welshman won 6-2 over William Borland in the first round, averaging 105.93 before going on to pick up the title with an 8-7 win over Chris Dobey in the final.
The top three is completed by Stephen Bunting. 'The Bullet,' who already won a World Series of Darts tournament earlier this year, went down 6-3 in the last 16 against Gian van Veen, but did record a higher average of 105.64 than his opponent (102.89).
Van Veen, by the way, had won 6-2 over Mike De Decker a round earlier. In that match he averaged 105.25, good for the fourth highest average of the day. The 22-year-old Dutchman eventually fell in the quarterfinals after a 6-3 defeat to Ryan Searle.

- obviously littler has the potential to surpass everybody simply because nobody has been this good at this age before, but people who think he would be any kind of favourite right now against prime taylor in a big final have short memories. it's obvious that prime taylor wouldn't win as many world titles if he was playing today, but there's also good reason to believe he'd be winning more than anybody else. hell, his statistical profile still stands alone in darts history and he might statistically be even better if he was playing today with better equipment, larger beds, more competition therefore more motivation, etc.colt24-03-2025
