Gerwyn Price has kept his chances of a fifth title at the
International Darts Open alive. After a fantastic comeback, 'The Iceman' was too strong for Ross Smith 6-5.
Price did not start the match well, while Smith grabbed a 3-0 lead with a 122 finish, 13-darter and a 66 check-out. Price reduced the deficit to 2-3 with a 67 finish and a 14-darter, before Smith again ran out to 5-2 with an 18-darter and a 12-darter.
With his back against the wall, Price began to play his best game. With Smith on tops, Price managed to throw out 75 via double 9, the absolute highlight came in the ninth leg. Both players were on 161. Smith was throwing first, but layed up instead of going for the bull. Price proved that this was the wrong choice and threw out the 161, putting a wry smile on his English opponent's face in the process.
Price then narrowly evened the score with a 19-darter. Smith had the advantage of throw in the final leg, but threw only three trebles in his first four visits. Price threw a 180 and a 140, among other things, before completing his comeback with a 13-darter.
Stephen Bunting will be his opponent in the semifinals. Bunting ended the tournament of Ritchie Edhouse, who had earlier stunted against Michael Smith and Rob Cross. Edhouse had one matchdart on double 12 to beat "The Bullet," but that chance went awry. Bunting then did strike with a 52 finish for a 6-5 win over Edhouse.
