Luke Humphries booked his spot in the Quarter-Finals of the
Grand Slam of Darts with victory over Ross Smith but by his own admission wasn't at his 100% best and he put that down to a lack of energy levels and perhaps not eating right but admits he will have to put that right against Michael van Gerwen.
"It wasn't the game I expected, in the last hour and a half before I went on the stage I just felt so flat, so tired and I think I showed it in my performance. I was literally hanging on every thread there to just keep going and when I went to the second break, I tried to get quicker and tried to keep my brain going. I just fall flat and feel tired, I've obviously got to sort out some eating. I've got to address that," he said post match.
"I've got a big game on Saturday, I'm going to have to be a lot more energetic. It's hard to pinpoint it, I had a great nights' sleep last night. I've been going home in-between sessions so I had a great nights sleep. I've just got to build up the energy levels."
He also spoke about watching the Van Gerwen game beforehand and that it was hard to practice as he did battle with Josh Rock. "It's probably in the top five matches I've ever witnessed. All credit will go to Josh but some credit should go to Michael because he was absolutely unbelievable. That's a vintage performance from him."
As well as a reminder that he can be beat as evidenced by Humphries as far back as the UK Open last year when he emerged. "He can also be human, 2017 first to 16 you probably discount your chance before you even get up on the stage. But I know he's human and I know he can have mistakes in him. I've beat him in long distance games before. I know I can do it and that's the key."
