An average of 100 or higher isn't that unusual in the PDC these days. At the
World Matchplay, however, this performance is even better than at most other tournaments, as the format is much longer.
This year the World Matchplay is entering its 29th edition. In the last 28 years, 38
averages above 105 have been achieved. Each and every one of them averages over at least ten legs.
When a glance is taken, one thing immediately stands out; the many mentions of
Phil Taylor. The now retired darts legend threw no less than 24 of the total 35 averages above 105, including the four very highest scores.
'The Power' threw a 114.99 average in his first round match of the 2010 World Matchplay against Barrie Bates (10-6 win). In 1997 and 2002 Taylor averaged 113.43 and 112.17 respectively.
The final of the prestigious tournament in Blackpool in 2013 was high profile. Then Taylor threw an average of 111.23 over 31 legs. Losing finalist
Adrian Lewis came to a score of 105.92.
Defending champion
Peter Wright threw up no less than three 105+ averages during the 2021 edition. In his semi-final against
Michael van Gerwen, 'Snakebite' reached a 110.37 average, good for seventh place on the list. Furthermore, Wright threw up averages of 105.46 and 105.90, after having thrown up an average of 108.13 earlier in 2015.
Lewis has a total of two entries on the list, as in 2014 he won 10-0 over Andrew Gilding thanks to a 110.51 points per turn average. Michael van Gerwen (110.93, 105.85 and 105.58),
Gary Anderson (106.06, 105.68 and 105.17), Krzysztof Ratajski (107.53) and Glen Durrant (106.93) are the other names on the list.
