After four victories on the European Tour last year, Luke Humphries has found success harder to come by in 2023. Last week in Graz a disappointing 6-1 defeat to Daryl Gurney in his opening match saw him hit rock bottom but Humphries is now looking to bounce back at the Dutch Darts Championship.
"Last week I think I let myself down," 'Cool Hand Luke' reveals in a post-match interview with Darts Actueel following his 6-3 win over Ross Smith on Saturday. "Sometimes I can be in a state of mind where, I don't give up but I let the game slip away. That's not me, I'm fighter in the last couple of years and I was really disappointed with the way I acted."
Surprisingly this is actually Humphries first time playing in the Netherlands and he admits he is loving the experience. "I can't believe I'm saying this but this is the first time I've ever played in the Netherlands and I've been a professional for six years it's quite crazy," he says. "A lot of the other professionals couldn't believe that but this something else, these are the crowds you want to play in front of."
Up next for Humphries is a third round tie with the recently crowned UK Open champion Andrew Gilding on Sunday afternoon and Humphries expresses his relief he isn't playing one of the Dutch players in front of their home crowd. "I'm hoping I can go all the way and I'm hoping I don't play someone Dutch in the final but if I do it'll be a great experience."
