"I just kept believing in myself" - Peter Wright silences doubters with brilliant return to form at 2024 German Darts Championship

Peter Wright sensationally won the ninth tournament of the 2024 European Tour campaign on Sunday night. 'Snakebite' was an 8-5 winner over Luke Littler in the final of the German Darts Championship in Hildesheim. For the 54-year-old Scot it is somewhat surprisingly, his first tournament victory of the year.

It's fair to say, Wright has been way below the level expected of him in recent months. In Hildesheim however, the two time world champion managed to turn the tables and produce some repeated brilliance. At the German Darts Championship he defeated Michael van Gerwen 6-4 in the quarterfinals after a great match. In the semifinals, he also beat Dave Chisnall 7-5.

In the final, however, it seemed to be just a step too far for Wright on the early stages as he trailed Littler 5-2. But, with six legs in a row, he managed to roar back into the contest and take the victory. "I just kept believing in myself," said an emotional Wright on stage afterwards, having averaged almost ten points less than Littler. Notably, for Wright it is his ninth tournament victory in the history of the European Tour, only Michael van Gerwen has won more titles.

Wright also had nice words to say afterwards for his 17-year-old opponent, who was also notably emotional on stage afterwards. "Luke is a fantastic dart player and he was blowing me off the board with 180s, but I thought if I could keep with him, I might get back into it," Wright assesses. "This means a lot to me. Luke is distraught because he wants to win. He’s a fighter, he’s a winner, and he’ll be back and beating us all again soon!”

Wright climbs two places in the world rankings thanks to this tournament victory, re-entering the world's top ten in the process. The European Tour continues next weekend in Belgium. From September 6 to 8, the first edition of the Flanders Darts Trophy will take place at the Antwerp Expo.
