Last weekend the
German Darts Championship 2024 was played at Halle 39 in Hildesheim. The winner of this
European Tour tournament was
Peter Wright, who defeated Luke Littler 8-5 in the final.
Snakebite did not have an easy road to victory. In the first round, the Scot faced German young talent Niko Springer, whom he defeated 6-4. After that, Wright beat his opponents Stephen Bunting (6-5), Gian van Veen (6-4), Michael van Gerwen (6-4) and Dave Chisnall 7-5.
Wright had stressed at the beginning of the month that he would win majors this year. A statement he repeated after his victory over Gerwyn Price (6-4) in the quarterfinals of the New Zealand Darts Masters 2024. In that match, Wright had an average of 103.36 and showed a glimmer of hope that he is still a force to be reckoned with.
"I've won a lot of titles. It's not that I have to win them, but I just want to win them for myself," declared the former world champion ahead of the German Darts Championship. "I'm going to win the majors this year. I'm going to steal Luke Humphries' pocket money!"
Big words, as you would expect from the Scot. But hand on heart: who believed him to be serious and still have the necessary self-confidence after so many defeats? After all, his last title win was 10 months ago, when he won the 2023 European Championship at the end of October, a title that also came from nowhere.
It seems Wright surprised himself with his performance at the German Darts Championship, as he stood on stage with tears in his eyes after his victory over Michael van Gerwen, after which he expressed that he is "on the way back." Many tears also flowed during the awards ceremony.
German commentator
Elmar Paulke enjoyed the performance of 'Snakebite' last week. "Peter Wright is back!!!!," he wrote on the social media platform Instagram. "It's the first title for Wright in almost a year. The many tears at the awards ceremony show how big and important this win was for Wright. Congratulations, Peter. What a fighter, what a great man.''
