Peter Wright has spent the last year aside from a few titles in the darting doldrums but he exclaimed 'I'm on the way back' as he reached the semi-finals of the
German Darts Championship.
Bursting into tears after taking down Michael van Gerwen, the sense of the achievement was palpable for the former World Champion who was struggling to contain his emotions.
"Obviously you've got to play well against Michael (van Gerwen). He's had his operation but he's still playing good darts," said Wright.
The German crowd started to chant his name. Often a loved figure on the
European Tour by the adoring crowds, Wright then burst into tears putting his darts towel over his eyes.
"I'm on the way back," concluded Wright as he went off the stage emotional soaking up the applause from the crowd.
He produced an epic 109 average and six 180's to dump out the Dutch dynamo who himself averaged 104 but lost out 6-4. Both have had their travails on the oche in the past few months, but Wright seemingly can see a way out and that could be a title this weekend. A superb story brewing.
