Peter Wright has been on the slide for a while now, slipping down as low as 14th in the latest PDC Order of Merit. The past European Championship was a new low for the 54-year-old Scot, after his title defence ended with a 6-0 defeat to Jermaine Wattimena in the first round. In fact, Wright did not even reach a 75 average. Fellow pro Vincent van der Voort believes this could be the end of 'Snakebite'.

There have been flashpoints of brilliance this year for the former world champion, but on the whole Wright has had a nightmare campaign. "That man is impossible to follow," Vincent van der Voort said in the Sportnieuws.nl podcast Darts Draait Door. "It's been talked about so many times, but I really wonder what's going on in his head. For a year and a half/two years, he's been really struggling. Occasionally he wins a tournament because he's a terribly good player, but even when he's doing well he still changes arrows."

"I don't get it with that man anymore, don't think he can be helped. If you keep doing it like this, it's just finished. I don't believe there is no one who has told him to keep doing it like this. And if those people are there, he needs to say goodbye to them as soon as possible," Van der Voort continues.

Van der Voort sees little improvement and therefore fears Wright's career could soon be over. "At some point you just have to stop talking about it. But then in a year we'll have lost him, too. We're dealing with someone who - we have to keep it clean - doesn't have much sense."

Wright will be in action in the coming weeks at the Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship Finals and the World Darts Championship, wait and see if he can still reverse the trend. Van der Voort meanwhile, is set for a sabbatical in 2025 that may also mark the end of his own career and suffering his own slip down the rankings.
