Gerwyn Price spoke glowingly about Wessel Nijman after his defeat in the final of the 2026 European Darts Trophy. The Welshman had to accept second best in Göttingen against the 25-year-old Dutchman, who ran out a convincing 8-3 winner to claim the title at this European Tour event.
For Price, the final at the European Darts Trophy was his third ranking final of 2026. The former world champion endured a tough, lengthy final day, overcoming several strong opponents before facing Nijman in the decider.

Escape against Noppert

On his way to the final, Price saw off Danny Noppert, Dirk van Duijvenbode, and Damon Heta in succession. His last-16 win was particularly dramatic. Against Noppert, Price narrowly avoided elimination by surviving a match dart.
The Welshman had already impressed a day earlier. In his match against Joe Cullen, Price averaged a superb 106.7 per three darts, securing his place in the last 16 with authority.
In the quarterfinals, Van Duijvenbode could not live with Price’s scoring power. The Welshman took the match 6-3. That set up a tense semifinal against Heta. The Australian threatened a comeback, but Price kept his composure and closed it out 7-5.

Tank empty in the final

After such an intense day, Price admitted his tank was running low heading into the final. “It's been a long day. I ran out of gas in the end," he said afterwards.
In the final, however, Nijman was simply the better player. The Dutchman produced a high level throughout and gave Price few chances to get a foothold. Price acknowledged he did not produce his best in the decider, but was keen to highlight his opponent’s display. "I didn't play my best in the final, but take nothing away from Wessel, he was fantastic.“

The Welshman also noted that Nijman has been catching him out more often lately when they meet. According to Price, the Dutchman seems to find his top game whenever they face off. "Every time I play against Wessel, he plays brilliantly against me. He's been brilliant all year, he played fantastic darts today, but I will get my own back one day!"
Next weekend, Price already has another chance to win a European Tour event. On Friday, the Belgian Darts Open gets underway in Wieze. Price won the inaugural edition of this tournament in 2020 by beating Michael Smith 8-3 in the final.
