"If I win, I don't want an excuse": Michael Smith wants best version of Van Gerwen amid recent shoulder injury

Michael Smith heads into Premier League Darts Finals Night aiming to capture the prestigious title for the first time. Having lost to Michael van Gerwen in the 2018 final, he hopes to repeat what he did in the World Championship.

Smith speaking ahead of tonight said that he hopes for the best version of Van Gerwen amid last week's shoulder injury so that there is no excuses if he wins. Gerwyn Price or Jonny Clayton await the winner in the final.

"I feel like I've played really well in spells, but it's about coming here now and winning this title," said Smith - who lifted the World Youth Championship title at this venue a decade ago.

"I always believe I'm the favourite, I always believe in myself, believe in the process and hopefully it all comes together tomorrow.

"When I lost to Michael in the Premier League final, I also lost to him in the World Championship that year, so hopefully history repeats itself five years on, and I can beat him in the Premier League too.

"You want the best decision so the crowd get what they deserve. I want Michael to play well. If I win, I don't want an excuse.

"The Premier League is one of the biggest titles. Apart from the World Championship, this is the title everyone wants, so hopefully I can add it to my list!"
