Michael van Gerwen failed to capture his fourth PDC World Darts Championship title at the Ally Pally this year. The Dutchman got off to a slow start, quickly facing a 4-0 deficit that he was unable to repair against a rampant Luke Littler. According to Vincent van der Voort, 'MVG' was pretty pissed off afterwards.
Van der Voort revealed in Sportnieuws.nl's Darts Draait Door podcast that he had spoken to his good friend Van Gerwen after the match. The losing finalist released more in that conversation than he did to the media. "Really, he starts so badly in the first four sets. That he cannot answer and is not there," Van der Voort explained. "He just finds that to himself incomprehensible and inexcusable at that point. Then you notice that he is very bummed. If Gian (Van Veen) finishes second at this World Championship, he will think it really was a top tournament. But if you have already won it three times, then you experience a second place very differently."
Still, Van der Voort believes Van Gerwen should be proud of what he has performed this PDC World Darts Championship. "Second is just a very good performance. Out of 96 men, biggest tournament of the year. Then second is very good, but if you've already won it three times, you still think then it doesn't count. If you had said a month ago that you are going to play the World Championship final everyone would have said well I have to see that. He just did very well."
'Mighty Mike' will play a tournament in Germany today, just like world champion Littler. After that, the Dutch star will enjoy a vacation with his family. This means he will not be present during the Bahrain Darts Masters, which will be played later this month on Thursday, Jan. 16 and Friday, Jan. 17.
