The case of Gerwyn Price is a curious one in 2024. Despite having the 6th highest annual average for PDC players, the 'Iceman' has done little of note, dropping to number 10 in the Order of Merit. As such, few fans are calling for the Welshman to be selected for the 2025 Premier League Darts.
In the past, Price himself has been very outspoken on his lack of interest in the Premier League, even going so far as to say he'd turn down an invitation if it came his way. "I'm not sure about Premier League next year, don't think I'd even accept it if I get in anyway. I just want to concentrate on ranking events," Price said back in November for example.
Although Price hasn't been the only player to try and disassociate themselves from Premier League contention, the train of thought has led to some criticism from other players. In conversation with Online Darts recently, Nathan Aspinall had some particularly harsh words for players such as Price and Gary Anderson and their lack of interest in the Premier League.
"If they don't want it, don't give it to them whether they deserve it or not," Aspinall said with frustration. "Why should they get that spot when people like myself, okay I've had a bad year and I don't deserve it, but I want it and I will bring something. I will give 110% every single night on that stage. If they can't be arsed, why put them in? I just don't get it. I don't even know why the PDC would consider it. Because I think if they put them in, it looks bad on the PDC in my opinion."
Although it might be coincidental, just a day after Aspinall's comments to Online Darts were posted, Price has now taken to his Instagram stories to make a complete U-turn in regards to his potential Premier League Darts selection. "I get messages everyday would I play in the Premier League in 2025," begins the former world champion's message. "I'd be stupid not to."
"And having time off over the last few weeks has made me realise that without darts, I'm just at home bored. So hopefully, yes I'm in," he concludes. "And trust me, I'm in a completely different frame of mind to the last few years."
