Last weekend, the finals day of the 2024 Champion of Champions was held in Cardiff. Walking away from the 256 strong field with the title, was the impressive Welshman
Nick Kenny.
Champion of Champions is a unique tournament on the darts calendar. At this event the winners of 256 pub qualifiers from across the UK compete against each other for the ultimate title. The winner of the final tournament picks up the top prize of 10,000 pounds. Previous winners include Gerwyn Price, Jonny Clayton and Ryan Searle. Nick Kenny can also now class himself as part of this illustrious list.
"It's amazing! Especially being Welsh as well and all the Welsh boys that have come before me, I'm just buzzing to be honest," Kenny reflected afterwards in conversation with
Online Darts. "It has all happened so fast that it's not really sunk in yet."
The rapid fire best of three leg format has actually been a blessing for Kenny in his own opinion. After failing to make a serious mark on the Pro Tour since winning his Tour Card however, can this win now kick-start Kenny's professional into life? "Yeah fingers crossed!" Kenny answers hopefully. "There was a few things in my own head that I needed to sort out and I have done, and this year I've been quite good."
"I'm on the verge of World Championships and Players Championships so that's my aim. Try to keep myself in the Tour Card race but yeah, hopefully it catapults me," Kenny concludes with an honest admission. "I'm a nightmare in my own head sometimes, but it is what it is. I'm still learning, I'm still climbing my own little ladder and that's allI wanted to do, just climb my own little ladder and this is the next step on that."
