Nathan Aspinall came through a thriller against Ritchie Edhouse in the second round of the 2025 European Darts Trophy. 'The Asp' eventually prevailed 6-5 and will now take on Jermaine Wattimena in the last sixteen, who himself won 6-4 over Chris Dobey.
Both Aspinall and Edhouse did not reach their best level in Göttingen. Aspinall even stayed below a 90 average, his compatriot was just above that. "It was terrible. Absolutely rubbish," was Aspinall's brutal assessment in his post-match interview afterwards. "I played Ritchie last week and we had a fantastic game of darts, I expected the same again but Ritchie didn't perform well."
Aspinall also knows where the problem lay. "It was a struggle, I was beating myself up and I've not had a win yet on the European Tour," analyses the former World Matchplay champion. "I've got to stop putting too much pressure on myself. But I've got that win now and hopefully I can relax."
Aspinall has already won two majors, five Players Championships and one World Series of Darts tournament in his career. On the European Tour, however, he is still waiting for a first tournament win. If he wants to change that this weekend, he will, as mentioned, have to first see off Jermaine Wattimena in the last sixteen.
"I hope he doesn't look at me like I'm Chris Dobey! Because for some reason he just plays amazing against Chris," Aspinall jokes. "I expected to play Chris, I wanted to play Chris, but Jermaine played fantastic and he's a great dart player. I won't play that bad again."
