James Wade has continued a remarkable run after making it to the quarter-finals of the Swiss Darts Trophy last weekend. 'The Machine' is the only player to reach the quarter-finals at least once in all seasons of the
European Tour.
Wade is not having a successful season on the Euro Tour in 2024. The Swiss Darts Trophy was his 12th Euro Tour tournament of the year, but at the first 11 Euro Tours, the left-handed darter did not get past the second round once.
This did succeed in Basel. The 11-time major winner defeated Dimitri van den Bergh (6-3), Gerwyn Price (6-4) and Wessel Nijman (6-4), before Wade lost 6-2 to Callan Rydz in the last eight.
The Euro Tour circuit was established in 2012. So this year is the 13th consecutive season that Wade has made at least one quarterfinal, statistician TheRedBit180 writes on Medium X.
Wade was even in the final of the first-ever Euro Tour tournament in 2012, but then lost to Justin Pipe. In 2014, Wade did win the Gibraltar Darts Trophy, and two years later he also took the overall victory at the European Darts Matchplay. In 2018, Wade made it to two more Euro Tour finals, but also lost them. Since then, Wade never stood in a Euro Tour final. Wade did win the 2018 European Championship, which has been considered the final tournament of the Euro Tour season since 2016.
Dave Chisnall, Joe Cullen, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright all made it to the last eight on the Euro Tour at least once in 12 seasons. Wright and Van Gerwen failed to do so in 2012, while the 2014 season represents a hiatus in Cullen's run.
Chisnall only failed to reach the last eight on a Euro Tour in 2021. That year, only two Euro Tours were played due to the corona pandemic. 'Chizzy' then also failed to qualify for both tournaments.
