Christian Perez made history at the
European Tour against Niels Zonneveld who couldn’t find his way through to face Gary Anderson at the
European Darts Grand Prix.
Zonneveld was originally not even supposed to participate in the Euro Tour tournament in Sindelfingen. However, due to withdrawals by Dimitri van den Bergh and Nathan Aspinall, travelled to Germany.
With Perez he faced the second Asian player ever on the Euro Tour. Zonneveld was broken in the third leg by the Filipino, who made it 3-1 with a 14-darter and a 600 finish. Zonneveld fought his way back to 3-3 with two 14-darters.
A 12-darter then brought the 25-year-old to a 4-3 lead. Zonneveld missed two chances to double the lead to 5-3. Perez tied the score with a 20-darter and saw Zonneveld miss two more dimes. Perez hit the double and made it 5-4 with a double 8. With an 11-darter in the tenth leg, Perez delivered the verdict over Zonneveld. Perez will face two-time world champion Gary Anderson in the second round on Saturday.
The opponents of Danny Noppert and Michael van Gerwen were also announced at the European Darts Grand Prix. Johan Engstrom surprisingly triumphed 6-1 against Joe Cullen, which means he will face Van Gerwen in the second round. Noppert will face Daryl Gurney, who convincingly defeated Jose de Sousa (6-2).
